You should be able to do everything, except the new definitions won't work, and it will ask you if you want to upgrade. To upgrade would cost the same as buying the new version anyway, so you may just want to save yourself some time and buy the newest version.

2007 NAV Disk should still operate fine as long as you say you will update the virus definitions (after you have either renewed your contract or purchase a new one).

To be honest, Norton is not a great program. It is tough to get rid of and you also have to pay for it. In my experience it has cause more trouble than it's worth.
There are free programs out there. I use AVG free.

You would do better dumping it.Norton messed up my desktop, still need to fix it.Using laptop now with free version of AVG 7.5 which works great. You can check for free updates as often as you wish. It has a virus vault to keep the ones that can't be healed….had it quite a while and I love it…

Not recommended. If there has been upgrades it is generally additional layers of protection of the antivirus program itself aside from any visual enhancements being more user friendly. Generally today all upgrades in security software are generally a must have.
EXAMPLE:
Security software disabler Trojan
http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/S/security_software_disabler_Trojan.html
An upgrade by the company will stop many threats against it to protect it.
NOTES: There is no such thing as "last year's defintions" so that you need not concern yourself with that. Apparently you have a new pc now one year old and you never used the included Norton Antivirus CD included. If so - it is only good for a month generally with free defintion updates for the 30 days. Defintions updates are about daily anymore and Kaspersky checks hourly on Automatic Defintions Updates (recommended) clicked on. By comparison, Norton used to only update every Wednesday on Automatic. However, you can simply click manually update anytime to get current definitions if any that day or hour were released (recommended).
The only way other than the free 30 day trial to get updates is by paid subscription for a year in any antivirus product for sale activating real time protection. Free programs are not protecting the pc - they have no real time protection. Too late then.

John, answer this question..
you havent installed the Norton program last year ?
you havent used the product key (came along with the Norton) ?
If the answer is NO..
contact the customer care..
You can install the UPGRADED NORTON 2008 at free of cost..
use the same product key to activate it..
You will get the subscription and you will also get the latest definitions..
updates are updated hourly basis (in Norton 2008)
lighter than the previous versions.. so.. computer performance will not get affected.
advanced scanner which will report to symantec direclty about the new(like) threats..
hope.. i m clear !!!
