I bet you have norton 360, correct? if you do then it has an online backup for your data, nothing to worry about and you probably should take advantage of it, just in case something happens to your computer. click on the link below and have a read.

If Norton is saying that you need to back up certain files you have to, and to makesure norton is still protecting you from viruses it should have a green checkmark icon.

You do not "have to" backup your files. Your computer will still be protected from malware by Norton.
But consider what could happen if you don't keep a back-up of your important files. Your important "stuff" like photos, financial records, music, tax records, e-mails saved on your hard drive, your documents, your data, etc.
If your computer is stolen all your "stuff" is gone forever. If your hard drive fails (the average hard drive lasts about 3 -5 years), your stuff is history. If you lose your laptop…kiss your documents good-bye. If you must re-format your computer because of a virus…everything is erased. If your computer just "dies" from old age, they don't last forever, everything is lost too.
So no, you don't have to back-up your important files but it is always a good ida to….just in case.
Backing up to an external hard drive, removable media like CDs or online services like Mozy are all good choices if Norton does not offer storage space with your subscription.
Good luck.
