recently i got a free trial of Norton Internet Security 08, and untill now have had no problems with NIS.
But i have been having mysterious freeze ups while starting programs, especially ones i might need to do some sort of update while loading.
I thought this might have been something else, Video or something then my NIS got a virus scan need and when i try to run it it freezes up again
now when i say freeze up i mean the computer freezes, and while i havent set there long to see if it unfreezes, it doesnt at least for 2 min.
I uninstalled NIS to test a theory, and so far have not had any problems.
Has anyone else experienced this?

It could be a system resource issue since all Norton products require a lot of RAM to run efficiently.
You can see if your computer can handle more RAM by going to Crucial.com and running a scan.

It's important to note that everything takes RAM. Not only security products (such as active anti-spyware, anti-virus and firewall) eat up memory but your operating system, active browser windows, running applications (such as Word, Gaming, Messenger, Photoshop, etc), graphic card and malware all compete for system resources. The presence of Malware (viruses, spyware, etc) will particularly eat up your system resources so you may want to run your resident security products such as antispyware and antivirus applications to ensure that your system is clean.

yes also with norton - it also makes the computer really slow, i would try getting rid of norton and get another virus protector - bt do a good one but you have to pay for that one and i'm not sure who else does one! I would never use norton again as it just winds me up!

It is possible you have another anti virus/firewall software running at the same time. If you stop that running then reload/restart NIS and all should be well.

I purchased the Norton Internet Security 2008 on my new computer (quad core, 2 gig ram, 750 gig Hard drive, ect.) about 2-3 months ago, and liked it a lot at first glance. Several days after purchasing it on my new computer, I decided to add it on my laptop. I had the older version of Norton Antivirus on my laptop and it ran perfectly fine, plus I thought it would be a nice upgrade. My laptop's performance is nothing like my PC, but it's still fairly decent. It was the best laptop of its time (before laptops starting turning to dual cores) so I thought it would have no problems running the Internet Security.
So, a few days after running the software, it was working fine. However, like you, my laptop just started freezing out of nowhere! It would happen after opening up regular programs. One program I use a lot is Mozilla Firefox, and that would freeze every once and awhile. Every time my laptop froze, I had to do a hard restart. After a month of this ordeal, I decided to uninstall Norton altogether.
Of course, after I uninstalled Norton, my laptop ran perfectly normal. And ever since I uninstalled Norton, my laptop hasn't froze yet (it's been about 3 weeks now). My pc, on the other hand, has yet to experience a 'freeze' moment. Although, I do experience a lot of lag periodically. I don't know if that's caused by Norton, so we'll have to see.
I hope my posting helped you out! Long story short, yes, I have experienced the Norton freeze too. =)

I'm glad to hear you uninstalled NIS, because it's really awful software.
There are free alternatives that are better, like AVG or Avast. They also offer upgraded "pro" versions, but the free versions will do the most important thing (basic scanning).
My rule of thumb about virus scanners: avoid companies that don't offer a free version of virus-scanning software. The anti-virus industry is already a grey area, because there's really nothing to stop collusion — offering a free edition makes the makes the company at least *seem* honest. IMO, all the big commercial-only offerings are strictly dependent on your fear factor, and your willingness to put up with nonsense (e.g. resource-hogging, extra dialog boxes to click that get in the way of productivity, etc).

Yes! I have had like a trillion problems with using almost every norton package that there is. And almost everyone I know say the same.. it hogs the system and makes your computer run a lot slower. I was able to and I am very happy with Avast Antivirus. It is free, it can monitor everything… it doesnt slow the computer.. it doesnt take up a lot of memory. It is friendly with both win XP and vista plus it regularly updates.. and i have only heard good things about it..
so give it a try. Available @ http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html and you can also go to download.com and search for it to read reviews.
Hope this helps
