To start off, I will admit to the fact that I am a support technician with Symantec/Norton. However, I am responding as an unbiased person who has seen it all. From the days of the punch cards, ’till now. So, please accept this with an open mind, and not as an attempt to protect the Norton products.
First of all, no security program lets viruses in. People do. I’ve been in the industry 20+ years and can stake my knowledge and job on that fact. What people don’t realize, is that ALL security programs operate in the same fashion. They treat a virus like a real life virus. 90% of the viruses out there are a mutation of older viruses. Security programs look for the basic instructions in all forms of data, or simply put, the basic dna structure, as the data communicates with your system. In going or out going. When someone produces a new virus that has a basic instruction or “dna” that has never been seen, that’s when you get attacked. The rest of the time, you are protected. Unfortunately for us, as a user or technician, there are people out there that come up with new ways to fool you and get you to put the virus, adware, or spyware on to your system. Case in point…Look at the new Windows XP (or Vista) Anti-Virus pop up. That itself is a virus because Microsoft does not produce or advertise security software in the same fashion as Symantec, AVG, Trend, Kasperski, McAfee, Avast, or any other security software manufacturer. The pop up fools you into thnking you have hundreds of viruses and is offering you a free scan to identify them. As soon as you click anywhere in that window…poof, you’ve just released who knows what on to your system. The worst part of this particular virus, is that it looks so convincing and legitimate. It also will destroy some of your system 32 and registry files when you remove it, as it attaches itself to them. Unfortunately, when you get this one, it usually leads to a quick train ride to Full System Recovery land.
On a final note, you have to be carefull as to the amount and combinations of security you put on your system. They may conflict with each other, and mistake any updates coming in as a threat, and not allow the updates to come in. Personally, I had to remove ALL of my other security software before installing Norton 360. Things like Reg Cure, Uniblue Registry Cleaner, Spybot Search & Destroy, Spysweeper, and the trial versions of McAfee, Norton, AVG, or whatever came with your sytem, need to be removed also if you are installing any security software offering complete protection. There are combinations that do work, but, it’s a trial by fire method that has to be used. Which of course, leads to possible attacks. Hope this helps.
Sincerely
