Norton scans but will not allow opening an attachment.?

Dear Yahoo Mail Friends;
When I try to open an email attachment; Norton Anti-Virus begins a never-ending scan "Scanning attachment for viruses…", and never opens the attachment.
My internet provider switched my firewall, anti-virus, etc. to CA (California Associates) as of 3 months ago. I do not recall when I was last able to open attachments through Yahoo Mail. Is there some conflict somewhere, a bad setting, something wrong with my PC?
I have Windows XP Home Edition w. SP-2., Internet Explorer 7.0.5730.11. Attachments are important to me.
