I have a 60-day free trial of Norton Antivirus Protection with Internet Security. And I really like it so far! But I get free McAfee through my cable provider (Comcast). I've enjoyed the interface that Norton uses, and I'm considering just purchasing the 2-year download. However, would I be better off just using the McAfee provided by Comcast? I know nothing about the program, and I'm wondering if it's level of protection is comparable to Norton. Does anyone have experience with both? Could you recommend one over the other? If Norton really is better than McAfee, I'll be willing to pay for it. I didn't spend $1,400 on a laptop so it could be virus-infested!
I'm a little wary of the "free" virus protection, because if it was really so great, why wouldn't people be willing to pay for it? My boyfriend really wants to put Spybot on the laptop too, but it just seems sketchy…have you got any experience with Spybot either?

Both are rubbish, they are bloated and I wouldn't recommend them. The free avg http://free.grisoft.com/ is excellent, and dosen't affect system performance. However, of the 2, Norton is the better (notice the word better, not recommended) choice.

Ya if they are giving you free internet security defenalty take it McAfee is a very trustable and relable security provider. I have Norton but they are both have great protection against viruses. Ya i spent about the same amount of money on my laptop 2. If I was you i would just stick with McAfee its realy good.

Good security requires a multi-layered approach, and the least important layer by far is running some kind of anti-malware program (in fact, if you take care of all the other layers, you don't even need an anti-malware program using up extra resources).
In order of importance:
1. Create and use almost exclusively a limited user account instead of the default administrator account Windows sets you up with
2. Read up on social engineering and how to avoid it
3. Don't download illegal copies of software, music, or movies
4. Set Windows updates to install automatically
5. Make regular backups. If possible, back up your entire installation (using Norton Ghost or Acronis True Image)

McAfee's okay, but please don't use Norton; it misses a lot of common viruses. There is no need fro you to pay for antivirus software. I suggest downloading Avast or AVG; you can find them through a search on http://www.download.com. Companies like Norton rely on scare tactics to keep their customers paying for their sub-par software. I've used avast in the past, but I now use AVG ad I've never had any problems.
