My laptop came with Norton Internet Security which is about to expire. I have a subscription to Norton Anti Virus Ver 10.1.6.6000? I am new to Vista and I understand there are some compatibility issues with some programs. Do I need to renew the Norton Internet Security to keep my computer safest with Vista or can I uninstall it and install my current subscription?

I recommend a program to you antispyware called avast 4 that eliminates virus to you and infections of your active system and having it antispyware to all your system provides a total shield to you, here I leave a connection you where to secure the complete version free:

yes you need an anti-virus, windows defender is just anti-malware/spyware protection. if you going to buy one though i suggest NOD32 it is the best out http://www.eset.com Norton will just slow your Vista PC down to a crawl plus Norton hasn’t been a good anti-virus for a long time now.

Hi
Do you mean Symantec Antivirus? If you do, I suggest you renew the Suite, since it's got a bunch of features (primarily firewall, HIPS, identity and phishing protection) which I think is not available in Symantec AV.
I also suggest you occasionally scan your computer with Superantispyware free and Malwarebytes Antimalware free.

I think you should re-new your Norton Internet Security and keep it updated to stay away from internet threats. Actually in Vista Microsoft added a new software named Windows Defender which can protect your computer against malicious software. From my personal experience Windows Defender is not well enough. So it will be a brilliant decision to re-new your copy of Norton Internet Security.

According to an article by the Washington Post,
Norton Antivirus had one of the worst average response times
for providing virus definition updates based on the worst virus outbreaks,
lagging behind every major competitor, including NOD32, Kaspersky,
Quick Heal, F-Secure, Sophos, Avira, Trend Micro, F-Prot, Panda, Protector Plus, AVG, avast!, ClamWin, and McAfee.
Symantec/Norton Live update are responsible for BSOD ( Blue Screen Of Death )
for millions of PC in China

I would suggest that you get Avast Home Edition version 4.8.
It now protects against spyware, rootkits, and other forms of nonvirus malicious software.
Best of all, it’s free for personal use.
