When I bought my Dell PC I also bought PC-Cillin internet security software to protect against viruses, malware etc. Now when I went to do an update, the program told me in order to continue getting updates, I have to pay $79 for a new subscription. Is this worth it? Or can I get the same virus protection for free? When you buy Norton and other similar programs do you only get 12 months of free updates?

Whether it is "worth it" is up to you.
If your PC-Cillin software has protected you well, it is worth it to continue to use it. And, there's no crime in paying the makers of PC-Cillin so that you can continue to receive updates.
However, the rest of the world seems to be leaning toward free software, such as AVG Free. And, AVG has a new version out. So, you might want to use that instead — for free.
But, you will also want to install software that helps to protect your computer against other malicious activities. Whatever else PC-Cillin protects your computer against besides viruses (such as spyware, adware, and other crapware), you will need to find new software to protect your computer against the things that PC-Cillin used to protect it against.
