everytime i try and install xp i get the error setup was unable to create, locate, or modify a critical file C:\winnt.sif does anyone know what is causing this and/or how to fix this. any help would be greatly appreciated. thank you.

Could be a scratch on your CD.. could be your CD/DVD Drive not properly reading the cd. Try cleaning it. or placing the cd into another drive. Hope that helps.

Try using a tool like http://ultimatebootcd.com/ to COMPLETELY erase everything from the hard drive. Format it.
Then, using the windows CD, install and when it asks you how to create, tell it to create a new NTFS filesystem. DO NOT use the quick method.
See if that fixes the problem.
Also if the harddrive is old and may be failing, then you'll need to buy a new hard drive.
If the CD is scratched severely, then that may be the cause. As a last resort you can use crest flouride toothpaste [regular] to CAREFULLY fill in the scratches. rub it on from the center outward, using a soft cloth. This will only allow you to use it for maybe a few hours so make it count.
