I’m trying to install Norton Antivirus to my father in laws computer, which has a trojan horse virus. A message keeps coming up that says “Unable to install, there is a copy of Norton already installed on this computer. Please go to add/remove programs to remove.”
Well I go to add/remove and Norton is nowhere to be found on the list. I’m not even sure what Norton would have been on the computer for in the 1st place, there are no icons or anything indicating that it would have ever been on the computer?
How can I get this installed?

1) Reboot.
2) Try again.
3) If it still doesn’t work check registry for Norton antivirus although is suspect after reboot it will be fine.
Caution: While tempering with the registry you cand damage your operating system beyond use so be very careful what you delete.

go to the local disk then go to program files then look for norton if its not there there’d be parts of it in the registry which can be cleaned up by c cleaner (google it then you’ll find it)

Norton has software on its site that will remove all traces of norton previously installed. After running that software installing should be a breeze.
Here is a link to that tool. Choose your product from the list.

Norton is one of three Anti-virus’s that remain on your computer without being seen, go to the back of the Anti-virus pack and look up their phone no and contact them or go on line for help they will take you to a link that will take off the old Norton so you can install the new. You will not be able to do anything till you do.

LOL! i just fixed my problem today. like seriously just like 6 hours ago fixed it. i couldn't even get on my internet to get a faster way to get rid of it… but this way is a for sure way to get rid of it!
go to your start button and in the search you will type in something to get to your registry… it's like "reged" or something and it will like pop up… and then you go through deleting everything that has "norton" in the name. it takes forever. after you deleted everything, upload norton and then run the scan, reboot your computer, restart the network thingy, and you're good to go… i will try and find a site and then edit my post!
edit:

that describes how to do it. What i did was i went straight into the registry, and my dad i guess deleted everything that said symantec and norton… all i know is he pressed F3, delete, and enter.
hope i helped!
edit2:
okay… i just looked at how to do it.
1. got to start
2. in the search bar type in "regedit"
3. something that says regedit will pop up, click it
4. once in your registry, hit F3, type in Norton
5. things that have NORTON in the name will pop up, delete them all
6. sometimes things that say NORTON, there will be other links underneath it somewhere that say that Symantec, delete all of that too
7. your main keys will be F3, Delete, and Enter
8. When you are ifnally done, upload norton ASAP, and run the scan
9. after you run the scan, reboot your computer
10. run the scan again
11. reboot your network/wireless this time
12. tada you should be connected to the internet in no time… and no more trojans!
