I already have Windows XP on my laptop and wanted to install Windows Vista Ultimate on the same drive. I got to the section where it says install a partition and the button to highlight "new" for new partition does not highlight. If I go the the small partition that is on the drive as a backup/recovery it will highlight but it is much too small to hold Vista. Also I tried this twice and now when my computer boots it goes to a screen asking which operating system I want. The first system is my XP the second read Windows Vista but that is a error because the operating system was not installed. If you click one of them you do not get an operating system to load. Help. Why can't I partition the disk and how do I get rid of the two phantom systems on the boot menu.?

On your laptop there is only one hard drive and a smaller size partition is created for backup. And the rest is for WinXP. If you want to install Vista at the same time XP, you have to get a partition manager to resize your XP partition size first, which you can install Vista to that partition.

You need to resize your partition. There are many programs that can do this. Here is a free one!
