I have windows vista on an HP pavilion dv6291ea laptop.
I have a problem with the DVD drive that I have experienced many times before and never was able to fix,
after downloading updates I find out that my DVD-RW drive cannot read contents of any optical disk, if I insert a disk and double click it on the Computer window it only gives me the option of “prepare this blank disk” while the disk isn’t blank, it gives me that option even for CD-ROM’s which is just plain stupid.
the weird thing is that if I run a virus scan by kaspersky it scanes the actual files on the disk but I cannot seem to be able to access it.
another weird thing is I can only read the disks if I uninstall the driver for the DVD drive “while” the disk is in the drive
and I can’t use system restore because restore points are long gone,
and please I’ve formatted my laptop about 4 times now and the problem still exists
also I have never made an update to the drive’s drivers so I cannot roll back the drivers, although the problem appears when I update vista even before the service pack and after too.
any ideas are welcome.
thanks in advance
I also have Driver scanner 2009 updated fully and it says that all my drivers are up-to-date
guys the DVD drive works I said it works when I uninstall the drivers with the condition of the Disk to be in the drive while uninstalling the drivers for it,
and yes it works with the supplied driver from HP and has not been updated since, and I haven't updated anything related to the DVD drive, just fixes for vista and stuff,
which implies that the fault is in the software not hardware.

Stupid idea, but you could try removing the CD drive, booting the computer up, shuting it down, and then putting it back in.

sounds like a faulty drive to me it will be something to do with the control board on the drive itself that will have firmware (hardware installed directly on the board itself in a ROM chip)
speak to HP as this may be an issue they are aware of and may be covered by a warranty repair even if the laptop is out of warranty
my toshiba laptop (P100) had an issue with the LCD screen cover cracking around the hinges, Toshiba agreed for all who reported it to replace the LCD cover free of charge, also the P100 had issues with the graphics card drivers and BIOS which has since been resolved with updates
speak to HP they are very helpful and will try and help you as much as they can with support and possible fixes but if it is a known issue e.g. faulty batch of DVD drives or a known driver issue then they will help you with a new driver or repair even if out of warranty for no charges

Since you reinstalled your operating system a number of times then the question of concern is whiter the DVD drive operated properly through windows supplied drivers or your DVD software drivers before the updates. Try not to update your DVD drive or drivers. See if the drive works without the updates. Don't installed windows updates pertaining to the DVD drive. Do a system restore if this works, and
you want to update.
A program like Nero or Easy Creator may help correct your
problem. Both have error correcting software and can scan and recover files.
