Question about Mozilla Firefox… 10 POINTS?

July 18th, 2008 · 5 Comments

I have a slow computer, and was considering downloading Mozilla Firefox. I was reading through the website on it, and was thinking that it would be better for me than my current browser, Internet Explorer. It claims to be faster and better in many ways.
However, I am worried about whether it would slow down my computer even more if it takes up too much space or is too much work for my computer.

Would you suggest me getting Mozilla Firefox, or will it damage my computer even more?

Thanks a lot!!!

Yes, your decision to move to Firefox is a good one and recommended. I have it on my Mac which has both OSX and Windows OS and it works fantastically and way better better than IE7 on both operating systems. There are currently a lot of problems with IE.

If you are using Vista, IE7 is even worse. Firefox, by contrast, is much more stable and not as much as memory hog. I rate it as the top browser on the market with Safari very close depending what you're looking for because its slightly faster.

Firefox is highly recommended on your computer and will not damage your computer nor slow it down. Firefox actually helps reduce vulnerability to viruses and pop-ups because many are designed specifically for IE. The space needed for Firefox is minimal and you should not worry. In addition to having all the features that IE7 is suppose to have, Firefox has additional features that make it more features that make it more versatile and simpler to use. Overall, Firefox is a stronger, quicker, and more efficient browser with far greater stability that IE7 will be on its best day. Firefox is also an open source browser application.

You cannot go wrong with Firefox. Loading it onto your computer will be one of the best decisions you will make regarding your computer

If you really wnat a speedy browser, get Opera 9.5. It is faster than any other browser out there, but no customisations and the interface doesn't look great.

Otherwise, to speed up your computer and free up space and memory for free:

Go to the Start Menu> Run
      Type in "appwiz.cpl"
      Uninstall whatever you don't need.

Next, go to Start Menu> Run again and type in "msconfig".
Go to the Startup Tab and uncheck everything you don't want to startup. If you want, you can uncheck everything, and your anti-virus will still restart itself when you log on.

Now go to My Computer> Hard Drive> Documents and Settings> [USER NAME]> Local Settings> and delete everything inside the Temp Folder. (This is a hidden folder so you will needto have "show hidden files and folders" checked in Folder Options) All the files in this folder are just temporary files that your Internet stored that for certain websites.

Then go to My Computer> Hard Drive> Windows> Prefetch and delete everything inside it. This folder is like an cache for programs and should be emptied about once a month.

You could also try installing CCleaner, it will get rid of alot of temporary files on your computer. It also has a registry repair system, which is easily the best free one available on the Internet:
      http://www.ccleaner.com/download

Another option is to try defragmenting your computer.
Go to the Start Menu and go to All Programs
Go to Accessories and System Tools.
Choose Disk Defragmenter and when it loads click defragment.

Next, go to Device Manger (Start> RightClick My Computer> Properties> Hardware Tab> Device Manager) and update all drivers.

Another thing I would say is to compress your files if you already haven't.
Open My Computer and right click on your hard drive
Check the Compress Drive button and let it do it's thing.

Finally, make sure your Hard Drive doesn't have any bad sectors. Go to My Computer> Right Click Hard Drive> Properties> Tools Tab> Check Now> Check both boxes and Start. It will ask you to reboot, so reboot. This will clear out any bad sectors on your Hard Drive.

These are short-term solutions however. the easiest way is to just upgrade the RAM on your system, but at least the ways above are free.

A very good, free AV available to download is AVG 8 Anti-virus:
      http://www.free.grisoft.com

And for any spyware problems, get SpyBot - Search and Destroy:
      http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.html

Both are free, as powerful as paid programs, like Norton and McAfee, and don't use up as many resources.

Just boot into Safe Mode (Press F8 when turning on the computer) and run full scans.

      Good Luck.

I had the same problem as you and I downloaded Firefox. It works much quicker, didn't take up a lot of space and I'm on it right now :)
