Questions about encryption-security?

I made an encryption program. But I have a few questions (not programming related)

1) If the program updates and shows the encryption per character typed, does that decrease the protection?

2)If I make the program to encrypt every two(2) bits instead on every bit, will that decrease the protection?
-Will it make the program run faster?

3)I am thinking about breaking the encrypted files into peices, and hide those peices in several locations. Domyou think that is smart?
-I am thinking about making a text file (encrypted) and hiding it in a sys32 folder with an .sys file extension. Is that wise, and will it work?
