on a scale of one to ten ten being the nest
my friend just bought a new computer which he hooked up too a router, he uses firefox avg free edition which i think sux as well as windows defender as his only anti spyware program, i told him he should upgrade to a better anti virus as well as another spyware program, in fact i recommended he disable its real time protection and use another one like spyware doctor or spyware terminator. but he is kind of the stubborn type that likes to do things only his way.
personally i give him no better than a six which is better than a lot but for the money he has put into it i think he could do a lot better.

AVG free is all I or any of my customers have used on personal machines since its' release and has never let any of us down. We were using spyware doctor until the release of AVG 8, which now includes anti-spyware. I would say he is on a winner.

You are correct. AVG (free version) is wildly popular with n00bs,children and the computer illiterate but has historically had the lowest virus detection rate of all the popular free anti-virus programs.
There are much better free anti-virus alternatives such as Avria Anti-Vir:

and Avast:

In fact the newest version of Avast has both anti-spyware and anti-rootkit componants, built-in.
Defender is definately mediocre.
His protection is 6-7 at best.

No matter how good of an antivirus you have, it matters what you do on your computer. If your friend downloads a lot of programs off of random sites, he will likely get viruses even with good antivirus software.
I have never gotten a single virus on my computer. I used Avast, AVG, and (sadly) Norton. I find that AVG performs better than Avast (and no it's not for n00bs - I know several people who use it, and I have seen better reviews about AVG than Avast), but they're both good. I usually scan a few times a week, and I disable real-time protection.
I guess his is at around a 6 or 7. However, if he's careful about what he does on his computer, he will greatly minimize the risk of getting infected by a virus/malware, no matter what security software is installed.
