RE: antivirus software?

June 12th, 2008 · 12 Comments

Whats the best free antivirus software right now?
And in your opinion, why?
Please only mention FREE software, not symantec or norton etc. And i'm not interested in free trial offers.

AVG Free. In my opinion, simplicity, it does what you need it to do, nothing fancy.

Symantec AntiVirus. It always is coming up with new updates, keeping the users computer clean and safe. It always has the newest and up to date updates, it's good.

avast is the best i have found its free and reliable lets u know when u have a virus and u can run scans any time u want to catch those that slip by

I perfer Avast! because you can do a pre-boot scan which is useful because it runs a scan with nothing running. Besides, the interface looks like a media player!!! that's just cosmetics

Norton is good one. All you have to do is install latest virus definitions from symmentic website and use sp2 with xp. Keep definitions updating like twice a week and all works well.

Make sure you install all these things before going to the internet. And also keep firewall on. Works great :)

If you go to http://www.lavasoft.com and download the one that comes with that site it's really good as for scanning ,and free unless you want 27/7 protection. I use that weekly, and do a full scan. But for real time protection I use Avast! antivirus. It's also a free download and it catches and picks up on everything harmful except like the tracking cookies. Just run the lavasoft one weekly, and keep that running and you should be good to go! I've not had a problem with viruses since I got them both working together.

Avast! antivirus is probably the best free software plus free updates it updates automaticaly.AVG is not that good as avast it detects less viruses and kaspersky really eats your procecor.
So in my opinion avast!<———-for the win!

There is no such thing. They put in some virus and Trojans in there so you would buy there software at a later date. I've been down that road.

I Think Avira Antivir is the simple and best anti-virus software!

    • 11 xmetalfanx // Jun 12, 2008

Personally i dont use free AV's … but from what I have seen .. MULTIPLE SITES seems to rank Avira Antivir the highest of the 3 freewares (avant and AVG being the other two ) … AVG from what i have seen seems to get the worst rating of the 3 … although still better then Mcafee or Norton ..

Not Part of the question but I like either Kaspersky or NOD32 for the best Protection and resource usage … however neither of those are free

PCMAV, because it's made in Indonesia.. and, its can integrated with virus def database from ClamAV which has GPL..
