My local Best Buy has the following Gateway computer for sale:
GT5678, 2 Quad Processor (2.40 GHz), Vista Home Premium (64-bit) SP1, 750GB hard drive, 4 GB RAM, 256MB Video Card, and 22 inch HD Widescreen Monitor. The price $1,050.
I am not the most tech savy (I can generally fix minor problems) and I was just wondering if this is a good set up. The price seems to be low. I've been using the Mac OS. My wife has an iMac and about 7 months ago I purchased a MacBook Pro for myself. Unfortunately my son sort of made it his own and now I am letting him take it to college. So now I want to buy my own. I thought about purchasing another iMac but the cost is little too high. Plus I am one of those who believes in saving money and I am not dedicated to either OS.
I know there has been a lot of bad things said about Vista, but I am only using it for Internet, email, office documents, and music, and minor photo work. I was told if it is preinstalled on a new computer I should be ok.

yes, your last information is correct. if it is pre-installed it is ok. the major problem with vista is incompatibility. this usually happen if your hardware is old and the os is new. so if you will be buying all of them at the same time, all new, then you will be eliminating that issue.
also, vista is now on its sp1. if you will be checking microsoft's website, you will see that the vista os that they are selling online now comes with sp1 so you need to ask your local seller if the computer you want to buy has sp1 already.

Yes, Vista would be fine for any of that work, and anything else for that matter. The tech sector is catching up to Vista and the incompatabilites are dropping. And the 4Gb of RAM should help it run smooth. The price is low because that is the market now. Computer prices are dropping all the time because computers are lasting longer and manufacturers are fighting for customers.

yes… for that minor work, Vista won't be any problem… The problem what Vista has is with hardwares…. which it occurs while playing games!!! …….. It should be ok… Go for it!! Gud luck… Hope this helps!

I think you should still buy a mac. I have one and I love it. But you said you don't really want to spend so much money. BUY A REFURBISHED ONE!ยก Apple sells refurbished macs that are just as good as brand new ones. Apple still gives the same warranty to. Here's the link:

If you just want a manafactured machine then yeah, thats a good one. The price is not too bad either. Vista, yeah it will be more than compatible, but from a professional stand-point, I would say install XP with service pack 3. A whole lot easier to use, and lets face it, most everyone is familiar with XP by now. Now I will also tell you that if you know someone who can put a computer together you can get a better computer for about 400 cheaper. I just built a computer for a customer with about the same specs (he wanted a stronger processor than yourself) and the total on parts was 634 and labor was 200. With the processor you mentioned, the cost would be about 600 all together. Good luck, and oh yeah, definately stay away from Dell's, I fix about 5 of those on a weekly basis, they are just crap. FYI just in case you decide to shop around E Machines are crap too, just refurbished gateways. Best OEM machines are your HP's and Sonys. I hardly ever see them in the shop. E mail me if you have any other questions server_tech80@yahoo.com

Only in reply to one of the other answers. you may find it hard to install and activate XP, Microsoft are really starting to ask a lot of questions when you register and are really just trying to put XP to bed and sell more vista's. However they are also releasing a new OS next year so it may pay to wait and see what happens.

This seems like a better computer than what your looking at man. It just doesnt include the monitor, but you could get one for like $200. You really dont need anymore than 120 GB of HD. Plus you are really gonna want a nice motherboard that wasn't made by the big manufacturers, thats why Dell makes poor PCs, they put in great components and make terrible motherboards.
