I have a Windows XP computer, which is full of viruses– it takes like 20mins to start up!
Anyway I have a Windows Vista laptop and have used that instead for the past year and a bit.
I now want to rebuild my Window XP computer, but I don’t have the reinstall CD, any ideas on what I can do?
I have no anti virus.
What can I do to it? I’m thinking of deleting everything, then running disk fragmented (which will take about 3 days - seriously).
But viruses will still remain on my computer- what can I do? (Without paying for antivirus) If I download Mcafee trial, will it remove the viruses just like the full version?
What if I can access the CD image from c:\windows\i386 ??
Can I install it from there?

Well you have 2 options bascially, 1 is to purchase a retail copy of windows and boot to that cd and load windows, or 2 download a copy of Linux for free, I recommend Linux Mint it’s a debian based OS and I install it all the time for customers. For more info on LM go here:

At this point I think you’re past the point where you can just download an anti-virus program and clean the system. My best recommendation would be to find a OEM Windows XP disk, format the drive and reinstall Windows XP using the Product Key on the label on the side of your PC. This will remove all of the viruses and restore Windows to a better state (probably even better than when you bought the computer). Then all you need to do is run Windows update, install all of the applicable updates, install a free virus program and you’re set to go.
