Running an LCD TV as a monitor - bars on side - solutions?

June 20th, 2008 · 5 Comments

when I use my 19 inch LCD HDTV as a monitor, picture is great, but the resolution I'm using (1024 by 768) is not quite filling out the screen, and there are black bars on the sides. I've tried to move to larger resolutions, but the TV said that it does not support them. any ideas?

I'm using an NVidia GeForce 8600gt.

      try smaller resolutions…
you have to test it to find the right fit to your screen

      Reconfigure the monitor.

Resolution mismatch. TV's and Computer monitors do not handle resolution encoding the same. That is the reason for years they made tuners for PC to output the video correctly for TV. Short of maybe getting a converter (PC>converter>TV) versus directly to the TV, I am not sure you will fix it.

The resolution you probably want is 1280×768, this is the resolution that most smaller HDTVs use.

If your video card doesn't allow you to set that resolution, you may need to update the drivers, or you may need to uncheck "hide modes that this monitor cannot display" in the Display properties->settings->advanced->monitor Control Panel screen. Your refresh rate should be set to 60hz (this generally doesn't matter with LCDs, but some video cards are finicky about what resolutions they'll display at other frequencies).

Also, if you're using analog (VGA), try switching to a digital (DVI/HDMI) cable. The digital connection should accurately communicate the TV's resolution back to your video card.

You need to set the computer to output to the TV's native resolution.

For a HDTV like that, it is usually 1440 x 900.

Really it all depends on the TV itself. Computer monitors and TV monitors have different standards as far as resolution goes.

To save costs, TV manufacturers generally do not calibrate the screen to fit exactly 1440×900 pixels in the visible area. They usually just err on the side of caution and cause the resolution to overrun the edges of the screen.

Computer monitors are calibrated so that every pixel is visible.

So even if you get it set to the correct native resolution, you are still going to notice a bit of overscan. In other words, part of the start menu will not show up, along with about 4-10 pixels around the entire outside edge of the screen.
