Screen goes black after loading Windows XP.

August 17th, 2008 · 3 Comments

Last night my video went all screwy as I was using my computer. I got interference and snowy stuff all over the screen. I restarted the computer, and the screen went black after the Windows XP splash screen. While on the Windows splash screen there are rows of blue colored rectangles across the screen. I have an older nVidia GeForce4 Ti4600.

I restarted in safe mode, uninstalled my video drivers, restarted and had video (windows detected my uninstalled video card). So I downloaded and reinstalled my drivers, but when I restarted it went to black again. I also tried installing the newest version of directx.

I opened the case, took the card out, it looked fine, not dusty and it was not hot. I reseated the card, turned the comp on and the fan was working.

I haven’t yet gone to the reformatting step… I’m wondering should I reformat or is this more likely a dead video card?
"After the power has been off for about 30 seconds, turn it on and start tapping the F8 key (located on the top row of your keyboard). You will come to a screen with a bunch of different items. Choose the one that says something like "Boot into last known good configuration" and see if that works."

I had already done that, forgot to put it in original post. And yes, it stays black, seems like it happens when the video card tries post to the monitor.

Sounds like a dead video card, here’s a replacement:

Is it a flicker, or does the screen stay black? If it’s a flicker try this… Many users have a problem of their screens flashing (or flickering, or blinking) black after Windows loads. I’ve seen people blame everything from audio drivers to integrated graphics for this issue, however these are not the causes.

Microsoft has a service called Transient Multimon Manager (TMM). This (supposedly) makes it easier to run multiple displays. It also causes the annoying flash we all hate so much. It took me hours to pinpoint the exact process (which happened to be the Task Scheduler Engine), and even more time to pinpoint the exact task, so enjoy.

Here’s how to fix that annoying black flicker on boot:

      1. Click on the Start button (pearl? ball? orb?).
      2. Type “Task Scheduler” and hit Enter.
      3. On the left-hand side, click “Task Scheduler Local” (you should already be there, but just in case).
      4. Expand “Task Scheduler Library,” then “Microsoft,” then “Windows,” then click “MobilePC.”
      5. Up top, you’ll see a task called “TMM.” Click it, and on the right-hand side, click “Disable.”
      6. You’re done.

If it’s staying black try this:
I think that the problem may stem from a preloaded application that may have somehow become corrupt. Windows will shut down the system when there is a fatal application crash -hence the system seeming to boot, then the screen turning black.

After the laptop’s power has been off for about 30 seconds, turn it on and start tapping the F8 key (located on the top row of your keyboard). You will come to a screen with a bunch of different items. Choose the one that says something like “Boot into last known good configuration” and see if that works. If it doesn’t post back, and I have other ideas for you.

      Good luck!!
