      Or, a better question:

What is -my- generation supposed to do when we get old and there is no social security because the elderly today are draining it down to nothing??

Ugh @ my lowered paycheck that's supposed to help me when I am old but is being used right now on people that are dying from old age.

Sounds like UGH@ is a little disgusted with paying into social security, so, who isn't. Get used to it pal or move to another country.

My spouse and, I have paid into social security for over 102 years, we're now getting a return that barely keeps bread on the table, we don't dare get what we want shopping, we get absolutely what we need, we now visit the grand kids, 30 miles away, once a week, instead of two or three times.
I have a bone disease and can't get all the meds. I need without approval of the system, no matter what the doctor says. I was just refused a anti-biotic necessary due to intolerance of 48 others through lab tests, so what ! they say, find some other way to get cured.

You know what's ironic, my sister is a investigator for the social security system, she can't help although she tried.

My son, at 25 years old, saw what was happening to the system, he chose to buy insurance and retirement policies that would pay off for retirement, his friends laughed at him. I wondered. He's now almost 60 years old and is very wealthy due to his foresight. I pat him on the back.

Let this be a lesson, plan for the future, don't listen to others. Save and buy your own insurances.

And, as for your paycheck being used for those that are dying of old age, get a life, what the heck do you think I did for 47 years.

Well my son did an internship for his college degree in DC with a Republican Congressman. I can tell you that there is a 3 inch thick bill that suggests doing away with Social Security and it is a bit complicated…check out Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, a representative in congress who wrote it. SO I for one will not vote for McCain as this bill will be going to congress with in the next year or three. Many young people will be in favor of it as it is in there best interest but if you are not 55 yet it will not be your best interest for sure and if you are 55 it still is not in your best interest of in the best interest of the country period in my humble opinion!!

BTW Social security is in the red only because the money has been borrowed from it over many years for various programs and this Iraq war. When Bill Clinton was in office a bill was passed to keep Social Security solvent so that no borrowing could be done and it at that time did have plenty of money for the Baby Boomers. Then during Pres. Bush Jr's time the bill was reversed so that money could be used for other programs and a War! Btw…Chris…back in the 70's when I was in my 20's under President Carter, we all were required to pay a larger sum of social security so that the money would be there for the baby boomers. So the money was there and now it isn't…it is spent in Iraq!! AND the boomers, I for one are not even going to get what we are suppose to get for what we paid in! And Did you know that congress has a complete separate social security fund that they pay into that is solvent!!??

I think it's more important to be familiar with; to vote for and stay in contact with; our US Congressman/Congresswomen. The people we send to the US House of Representatives and US Senate are the ones who write the bills, debate the bills, and adopt or vote down the bills before they are sent to the President for his or her signature. Congress is the place that much of the work is done for funding Social Security and Medicare. I think McCain or Obama would sign off on reasonable legislation affecting these programs; if we can goad Congress into sending them something worthwhile.

I believe that people who belong to a political party (for example the Republican or Democratic Parties) should be insisting that their state and national party leadership focus on cost of living adjustments for Social Security and funding for Medicare programs. We should all be contacting our own members of Congress to do the same.

Christina says the elderly are draining the SS fund down to nothing. Nothing could be further from the truth. SS fund is "borrowed" by the government, and a bogus IOU is put in the fund. Also money from SS is used to pay bogus health concerns in young people diagnosed with ADD or some other disorder. If the SS fund had been separated from other thievery, there would never be a shortage for retirees. No matter who is elected, a major change must be made or the whole thing will collapse.

I am concerned about the cost of living and the needs of Senior Citizens. I am also concerned about working people losing their job and their home. I am concerned about the economy in general.

I think the time is coming when, for the first time in our lives, we will have to make a few sacrifices, not just hang on to our entitlements. Well of course I'll hang on to them as best I can, but I see a difficult 20 years ahead for our country. So I'm working in the garden.
