“I’m not for, quote, privatizing Social Security. I never have been. I never will be.” Sadly, McCain and his advisers like ousted HP CEO Carly Fiorina are on record declaring fidelity to the idea of diverting Social Security dollars into private accounts. On November 18, 2004, for example, McCain announced, “Without privatization, I don’t see how you can possibly, over time, make sure that young Americans are able to receive Social Security benefits.”
I believe that he wants to privatize it.

not really first he is not going to be elected and second social security is a something no one wants to deal with!!!

I'm 56 and people have been predicting the end of social security since I was a teenager. I agree with mister ed, I don't think anybody wants to mess with ss.

EVERYTHING about McCain frightens me.
Ron Paul ‘08!

I think it needs to be taken out of government hand completely. They treat it like its their own little slush fund. Right now they are financing the war in Iraq with it. I’m 60 and I wonder if there will be anything there when its my time to collect.

So, if I understand you correctly, you are assuming that something he said in 2004 is relevant today? If he did say that, I'm sure he had a reason for it. Is he saying that in 2008? So what if some of it gets "privatized"?…that doesn't mean it's going to make a difference?…it just means it will become harder for people for abuse the system. I'm betting that it's gonna take a few "private" (meaning non-government agencies) enterprises to step in & give an assist with so many things that are draining the current system by fraud & misrepresentation. It's not gonna be able to get fixed from within…that's a given.
Are the people answering these questions Americans? I have a hard time believing that so many people don't know what's really goin' on with the current computer & hacking dilemma that has put everything in such a mess.
Paper trail people…always have a paper trail so you can prove who you really are.

Why do you believe anything they say. Don’t believe the bias/lying media either.
That was almost 4 years ago.
Both McCain and Obama change their platform daily - Sometimes twice a day - from one speach to another - from one city to another.
Social Security was introduced the year I was born and I have been hearing somewhat the same thing . . .different day.
The President does not make the dicisions.
When will the people learn how to vote for the right Congressman.
They are the ones that should be working for the people.
I’m wondering how many people know how and who works our government and the proper process to get things passed.
The man on the street, often doesn’t even know who our president is, but they can tell you all about the neat stuff their iPod or expensive cell phone does.
DeeJay.

This doesn’t scare me half as much as Obama. I don’t think the American people woild go for that. But then it’s been quite awhile since the American had a say in anything. It seems we’re only puppets.

No it does not.

His position depends when you ask him.
Four months ago he said he was for privatization “along the lines that Bush proposed,” (i.e. a portion of SS accounts being put into private accounts) and and disowned details of a Social Security proposal on his own campaign Web site!
Last month he said he was “never” for privatization.
Whatever form of privatization he supports, he keeps saying it won’t affect “today’s retirees.” So personally it doesn’t scare me, but I do feel for the kids today who are paying into a system that needs some work.
Perhaps if the government stopped borrowing from the SS account…nah, too easy.

McCain worries me - period! CJ
12 OLD DRAGONS GUARDIAN // Aug 9, 2008
McCains stance on social security doesn’t worry me since he’s not in office yet. Things have a tendency to change once the elections are over, and this time around is not any different then past elections.

no because they can,t touch it, its been a ply for yrs , to get elected,
what worries me is the speaker of the house, she is Giving it away to all illegal aliens,
14 WooleyBooley again // Aug 9, 2008
Not a bit. Hopefully they stop illegal aliens from obtaining Social Security.
15 dmagee55@sbcglobal.net // Aug 9, 2008
it doesnt make any difference. No matter who gets in they will have a hard time doing anything to social security. Whatever happens will have to be approved by the legislators so the president cant make changes himself. I’d be more worried about who we elect to the senate and congress.

Everything about McCain worries me, including his stance on SS and the illegal invasion of Iraq.

I can tell you first hand that they have dipped in to it so many times that the late Baby Boomers will be lucky if they can draw out of it. When they tell you S.S is not broke it’s just another Washington lie.
Last year I was forced to file for S.S dissability at the ripe age of 60.after paying in to the system for 44 years When I got my first Check I never recieved any money for the 6 months I was out of a job after I filed.
In the past you always recieved back pay from the time you filed. I ask them and they said. No you will recieve your first months check after you have been approved for dissability. So, it sounds like they are cutting corners to have enough money for the millions of Baby Boomers that will be retiring in the coming years.
In response to your question . It scares me that Mc’Cain is still standing. Im Old,. He’s Older but this is what the Republican party wanted.

Yes. I also heard him say in a speech that he would cut Medicare.

I’m not scared, but I’m not buying what any politician says. If you want to be sheriff you don’t need to be sheriff! ~ : )

No. I am not covered by SS.

All politicians scare me. Some more than others, but in this election, I am more worried about the marxist ideas of the younger candidate. Social Sec. will be gone soon no matter who is in charge when the floor drops out. It will be a product of bad planning since around 1936 or there abouts.
We’ve been giving away the farm on this for years. My in-law has collected social security for disability since 1978. Just prior to that he was a college professor. Nothing in his health changed. It is just easier to get 24-28 grand a year for doing nothing than working for it.His physical problems were there when he taught. That is just one example of thousands for the last 30 years.
Should be no surpise SS is broke now.
22 wyomugs // Aug 9, 2008
No president is going to single-handedly change the SS system. It just doesn’t work that way.
I’m pretty much settled on the fact that I will never retire! Just look at Rush Limbaugh’s grandfather… he “retired” from his law practice at age 102, and only because he was FINALLY physically unable to go to work. He died at 104!
Have a “senior” day.
