In a couple of days, my Norton AntiVirus subscription is due for renwal, but I’m not sure if I should be paying the £33 fee for updating the program.
I keep hearing numerous things about the free software AVG, some claiming it to be better than Nroton, others claiming it to be worse because it’s a free program.
So what would be the best option. Give up Norton and go for AVG, or just stick with what I’ve been using and pay for another subscription?

Avast is a good anti-virus
http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html [Free home edition]
Avira is also a good anti-virus

Windows Defender is recommended in addition to either for real-time spy-ware protection.

Remember to only have one anti-virus installed on your PC

i would not go for Norton anti virus and its a heavy resource consuming anti virus. i will go for any free anti virus as they can do as good as this monster apps can do. Even if i have buy an anti virus, i will go for mcafee.

You should get Kaspersky instead. I think it allows the most control over what goes on and off your machine.

Just because it’s free doesn’t mean it’s crap, that’s a total myth. Usually that’s true, not in the case of AVG.
All the techs at the computer store I use (Computer Rack) swear that the best protection is a combination of AVG 8 Free and Windows Defender, which are both completely free.
The links to both are below. If you still feel better paying for a program, Norton would be my last choice, it’s ridiculous how many things it doesn’t protect from, and if you have an issue and then call them on why a well known virus managed to get onto your system, the best you’ll get from them is “well we can’t be expected to keep out every virus” which in my view is unacceptable.
Kaspersky Labs is the best purchaseable one out there right now but seriously, I paid $80 for it a few months ago, used it for 24 hours, then uninstalled it and grabbed the free AVG and Defender, that’s what I rely on completely.

Remove Norton and install Avast, AVG used to be good but the new version offers poor protection, see below:
You should forget AVG free edition it has a nice interface but is poor at blocking viruses so not worth using.
I've tested both Avast Home Edition (free) and AVG 8.0 (free), AVG let me save 75% of the test viruses to my hard drive only blocking 25% were as Avast blocked 75% of viruses, Avast picked up the other 25% of the viruses that were in zip files the second I tried to extract them.
I use Avast combined with Comodo Pro on my XP home computer and have no problems with virus's or spyware.
Test them yourself: http://www.eicar.org/anti_virus_test_file.htm
