Should I renew Norton 360 or buy a new one?

Solved

I bought Norton 360 last year and am happy with it. The subscription is about to run out and I have the option to renew from Symantec for $60 or to Premier version for $80. I have also accepted an upgrade to version 2 for free from Norton.

In the past, with Norton Internet Security 200X and other products, I have not renewed, but simply bought the latest year's version - usually at a sales price that is much cheaper than the renewal fee, and the new product includes another year's subcription. So it seems a cheaper way to renew.

This week I see that I can buy Norton 360 at a local electronics store for $30. I would guess I can buy this and effectively get a subscription renewal on the cheaps.

Can anyone confirm whether this works with Norton 360? Has anyone actually done it? Does it require an un-install of the old product and an install of the new one (with new activation key, etc.)?
OK folks, I appreciate all the alternatives, but can someone answer the question about the mechanics of buying a new 360 to extend the subscription?

DON'T spend any money on Norton products. They are huge resource hogs, slow to scan, don't find many viruses and there are better (free) alternatives.

      1) Download ZoneAlarm Free firewall or Comodo Personal Firewall

      2) Download AVGfree from http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/ww/frt/0?prd=aff

      3) Download Spybot S&D

Use these three and you will be at least as well protected as with Norton.

Try bitdefender this is one of theeee best which I have ever seen. No other anti virus can work on virus as well as worms. This is worth a try.

Since you have tried for a year using Norton 360, it is better to try other AV, like Kaspersky Internet Security or Eset Smart Security Suite, these product has the same functionalities almost as with Norton 360 but with a lesser cpu and memory resources, these two antivirus (Kaspersky and Nod32) can be use for 30 days at least you can evaluate its performance impact on your pc,

You can easily buy from any electronics store, and as you said they are cheaper, and usually in a bundle.

The Premier version of norton isn't much different from Norton 360 but with some added programs.

Well… I looked up Norton 360 on version tracker and it listed the updates and new features as follows:

      "What's new in this version:
      What's New & Improved.

      * Enhanced performance including faster scans and browse speeds, faster start-up times and more
      * Identity Protection securely manages all your user names, passwords and sensitive information when you shop, bank and browse online
      * Browser Protection defends against malicious programs that use vulnerabilities in your browser to insert malware on your PC
      * Network Monitoring helps protect your home network against unauthorized access by detecting whether your connected wireless network is secure or not secure and displays the security status of all the Norton products on your network
      * Backup provides support for new backup destinations including Blu-Ray and HD-DVD discs and iPods ®
      * Registry Cleanup helps optimize performance by removing unneeded Windows registry files.
      * Phishing Protection for Firefox guards online attempts to steal your personal information by identifying and blocking fraudulent web sites. "

If any of the above new features/upgrade interest you then I would recommend getting the newer version, if they don't then stay with what you have.

      I hope this helps.
      (P.S - Norton? hmm yuck)
