I have a 250 GB HDD in my computer and I have used about 100 GB on videos/music and I will continue to add more. I back it up on DVDs but, I want to have them all in one place like a external HHD. I have read many reviews and their are so many failure rates among external HDDs. So, should I stay with DVD backups or is it a good idea to buy a External HDD? Or use Both?

I would use internal hard drives for backups before either external drives or DVD. The least reliable storage medium is DVD though. If you're going to store data on DVD you need to make sure your regularly revisit the DVD's, copy the contents off the media and re-burn.

try to even it out because if ur HDD crashes you'll lose everything at least try to keep some stuff that is most important to you on disc

Go for both. That way you don't have to worry about losing data.

DVD back ups are not the greatest. DVD's can get scratched easily and may have problems.
with an external hard drive its harder to scratch the disk be cause it is protected. if you take care of it you should have no problem with it.
And if your an extremely rich person, go all out and buy a solid sate external hard drive…
this is a hard drive that has no disk so it can be dropped and will not be damaged internally.
if your choices are limited to External HDD and DVD i would go with the External because it will have a good size, really cheap, and everything is all right there.
just make sure you get a good brand that you can trust.
good luck!

I think DVD's a better because it'll be cheaper to make multiple copies of all your data. I worry about HDD's because they have moving parts and if they're not treated like fine China, your data will get corrupted. Maybe you could invest in a blu-ray burner to back up your data and get more on a disk.
If I buy music, I only buy it on factory-pressed CD's so I know I'll have them for a long time. I do burn a lot of DVD's from pay channels but I figure if I a program, it's not the end of the world. With music/TVshows/movies, it's almost better to only rent stuff. Is this stuff you've produced yourself? If not, the more and more you collect, the more work and expense it is to maintain it. I like renting media for that reason.
