Some laptops do not play games well, usually because their graphics solution isn’t very good.
Minimum System Requirements For The Sims 2 Nightlife:
In order to install and play The Sims 2 Nightlife you must have The Sims 2 installed and meet the hardware requirements listed below:

1000 MHz (1 GHz) or faster processor.
256 MB or more RAM.
At least 1.5 GB of additional hard drive space.
Supported T&L-capable video card with at least 32 MB of video RAM.

Well according to the official site http://thesims2.ea.com/help/detail.php?help_id=281any problems with the Sims 2 and Vista is usually related to your graphics card.
Best cards:
These cards will fully support DirectX 9 and should provide the best The Sims 2(and Vista) experience
ATI Radeon 9800 and above. (9800, X550, X600, X700, X800, X850, X1600, X1800, X1900, X1950)
NVidia 6000 series and above. (6600, 7300, 7600, 7800, 7900, 7950, 8800)
OK cards:
These are early DirectX 9 cards and budget cards that may not support all The Sims 2 graphical features.
ATI Radeon 9600, 9700, X300, X1300
NVidia 6200, 7100
Any other cards will cause you to have problems, basically.

I actually think that Wollybutt and the other person are correct and the problem is your graphics card, but here is some info that I got from EA’s sims 2 website about playing the game on Vista:
Many games that seem to have problems running in Vista can be fixed by doing this:
1. Right-click the game’s desktop shortcut icon and choose Properties.
2. In the Properties Panel, click the Compatibility tab.
3. Place a check in the Compatibility Mode checkbox.
4. Select Windows XP (Service Pack 2) in the mode box.
5. Click Apply to save your changes.
If you did not opt to have a desktop icon installed:
1. Find the game icon listed in your Games directory.
2. Right-click on the game and click on Customize. This will bring up the Customize menu.
3. Select Play.
4. Select Edit.
5. This will bring up the Properties screen. Click the Compatibility tab.
6. Check Run in Compatibility Mode and then choose Windows XP (or whatever operating system the game was designed for).
7. Press Apply, and then press OK. You will be back at the customize menu.
8. Close the customize screen.
9. Now the game is configured to run in Compatibility Mode.
