guys I have 6 gigs of memory and still a slow computer. with no viruses or spyware I've tried everything pretty much. disk cleanup, emptied recycable bin, removed unwanted programs and deleted files i didn't want, including cookies and browsing history. could it be the viruses in my quarantine that make it slow or what?
thanks for the help. =]
I've already tried a registry cleaner, and I've already ran a virus check.

ITs a tiny evil virus that might be making it slow.

6 gigs? Most OS don't see more than 3-4 gig.
How fast is your processor? You can have all the memory you want, but if you're on, say, a Pentium II, then who cares?

First thought is bottleneck with different RAM speeds.

Try a registry cleaner.

It is either your cpu or your memory is slow. Make sure you have at least DDR2 667 (PC-5300) memory. If not you may have to upgrade your motherboard and replace the memory with somthing faster(2GB of DDR2 800 is just $50). If you are using early DDR2 memory(DDR2 400) you will not need to upgrade your motherboard. If you do have DDR2 667 memory it is your processor. You can get new processors from dell and http://www.newegg.com. I think best buy also sells them but i suggest that you do not buy from them. Newegg is the cheapest. The program CPU-Z(http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php) can tell you what type you need.

another suggestion, it could be something as simple as how fast your internet speed is through your cable or broadband. u may want to upgrade to their fastest speed if u dont already have it.

It sounds like you are a "power user". If that be the case, then you should be comfortable with the following suggestions. Think about all of the software you have installed over the past 6 months or so. Make a written list of these. In this list, write as much of the name/title that you can remember. Also, if there were any "popups" added with programs that you may have installed, note them, also. Now, go to "START", "RUN", and the then type "regedit". Click on "My Computer" at the top of the Registry Editor Screen. Click the tab "Edit", and then click "Find". Type the name of the file/program from your list, and conduct the search. Delete all instances of found, and erroneous entries with that name. Click F3 to continue search, deleting subsequent entries. As long as these softwares are not dependent on currently installed programs, deleting them should be no problem (e.g. AOL et al, Kazaa, BullGuard, etc…). If you do not feel comfortable using Regedit, then go to >>>>Start>>>>Run>>>>then type "msconfig>>>. Click okay. This will show you what is starting up at boot, and where. I believe that you know what you're doing, so don't be afraid to do what you do. Luck……..Oh, I forgot…. "RUN", "sfc /scannow".
