I know about and have tried all the basic things: bought more RAM (now 1GB), defragged, ran CCleaner, deleted some rubbish, killed useless startup programs, etc.
The RAM helped a bit but it's still insanely slow sometimes. I only have about 9.4GB left out of 60GB on my hard disk, could that make so much difference?
I have Win XP Pro with a 2.2GHz processor.
It got a lot slower after the motherboard was replaced, but it's a good, compatible board so I don't really know if that's the problem or the disk space or something else. Could it just be that it's getting old? Must be over 5 years now.
Thanks ![]()

The type of processor it is can make a huge difference. Is it 2.2Ghz Celeron? Because they are usually much weaker than Centrino. I too have a 6 year old computer and its just time to change. Probably for the best as there is only so much you can do with an old one. Try deleting some stuff from your hard disk. It helped me when mine was starting to get really slow. But in the end again there is only so much you can do, before you have to buy a new one. Hope it helps

Try uninstalling those programmes which you seldom use. Also perform msconfig to deactivate programmes that you do not need during startup.

check the bios press delete or f10 as the pc turns on
make sure its running at 2.2ghz and not 1.5ghz or so on
other option would be to get xp pro disk and formatt the whole thing

Maybe the hard disk is getting old and needs to be replaced.. mine was like that too.

there comes a point when only a fresh reinstall of windows will cure problems, if you've been running the same installation of xp for the last five years then it's probably about time for a reinstall of windows
your computer specs aren't that bad for xp it should run fairly quickly
the only thing you haven't said you've done is a spyware and virus scan all know for slowing up computers
if you haven't got any anti spyware or anti virus you can download spybot search and destroy here http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/
and avira anti virus here http://www.free-av.com/
