You can't extract the operating system install disk or just the bare operating system from your system onto a disk easily.
However, you really shouldn't need to reformat. Additionally, whatever is making your machine slow now will do it again if you don't do something about it.

Your best bet would be to purchase a new copy of xp pro for your computer. try best buy or newegg.com. Before you do that, I suggest you defragment your disk, clear cookies, and if your computer is slow at start up, try the program,"quick startup". It is free, and it disables stuff you don't use at startup. Also, try "tweak now regcleaner". That should speed things up. Make sure that before you try reformating C drive that you save your pics and other stuff to another drive or to a disk. Once you re-install windows, just move all your stuff back.

Try first defragmenting the hard disk, and removing all the useless stuff like old backup copies of files and such.
Piriform have two great programs for these: Defraggler (which defragments your hard drive) and CCleaner (which cleans up your Windows registry and does other kinds of useful stuff as well)

You can also try searching your hard drive with the Windows search function. Type *.bak and *.tmp (this way you can find all files that end with .bak or .tmp - these are backups and temporary files). Delete these (you probably can't delete ALL of them, because the operating system will forbid you from deleting some of them because they are in use, but you should be able to delete most).
Empty your browser cache (you can do this from the browser drop-down menus).
You may not have enough memory on your computer! Consider buying more RAM memory. If you use Vista, 2 gigabytes of RAM is MINIMUM. Vista doesn't work well with a mere 1 GB of memory.
I hope this helps. It's a bit vague I know, because I don't use Windows on my computer, so I don't remember which thing is where in Windows (I run on Ubuntu Linux).

reformatting should be a last resort, but I don't know why everybody here will reformat at a drop of a hat. but, you can't save your current state for several reasons:
1. during installation, the OS places the necessary files on your hd that are needed for the computer to boot from the HD. these files must be in the first sector of the hd. simply copying your windows folder will lose these files.
2. the best way to copy a large amount of data like windows (~2-4 gigs) would be an .iso file. however, if you reformat your hd, you can't boot from an .iso file without the necessary boot files as explained above, so you are kind of in a catch 22: you can save your hd contents, but you can't reload them without the hd contents.
you should really think about cleaning up your hd first before doing a reformat.

Why format if you don't have any Operating System issues. This is what you need to do.
1. 2. Go to Internet Explorer, go to tools, internet options, delete all (this will not delete your mail)
2. Go to your C Drive, right click, go to properties, then click cleanup.
3. Still in Properties, see if you need to defrag your files, this will take about 30 to 40 minutes if you have to defrag. Do an analyze to check.
4. Now after all that, in tool click error checking, reboot your computer, this will take about an hour.
Now have you run your spyware program and antivirus programs?
I don't know how much RAM you have. RAM always help, do you have at least 1G of RAM?
