A month ago my purse was stolen. Inside was my social security card, as well as my 4 year old daughters card, and my 1 year old son's card. What can I do? How can I find out if someone is using theirs? Are there any preventive measures I can take?
I have reported the purse stolen (a month ago) and told them the cards were in it. They asked for my childrens names. I also checked with the Social Security office (a month ago) and they don't do anything. They can't mark it stolen or anything like that. Just wanted to let those of you who thought I hadn't done anything, that I have. I was just hoping to get some new advice from people who might have had to deal with this.
Yes, this is a lesson learned the hard way. My mom always warned me to not carry Social security cards around in my purse. Usually I don't, but I had needed them a few days prior and forgot to take them out.

Wow sorry to here that this is major, you must act very quickly on this, call the Social security office in your state report all the cards stolen, they will tell you what safety measures to take. Also put a flag on all Social Security Numbers involved, this will let you know every time a number was used. please act right away, because that is all a identity theft expert needs

A month ago ? And now you are concerned, thinking about preventive measures ? You should have never carried them.
I think you have never heard about identity theft.

First thing to do is file a police report about the purse and ID's being stolen. You should have done this a month ago of course, but that's moot now. File the report now if you haven't already done so, and move forward.
One good thing you can do is sign up for one of the identity monitoring sites, like Identitytruth.com , lifelock , etc. My oldest daughter lost her wallet, which had her SS card in it because she was applying for jobs and thought she may need it with her. She called the SS dept to report it as lost, and all they would do is send her a new one. Apparently, they have no policy in place for the public to protect their most important document available. They would do nothing to "block" it from being used by someone without authorization or anything. They told her that if she found out that it was being used in some way other than by her, she could report it then, but that was it. Sad huh? We signed up for Identitytruth.com a short time later, and they keep track of our family's information and will let us know if anyone attempts to use any of it. I know it works because when my daughter later got a job and had to show her ss card, we were notified by email that the SS # had just been used.

A month ago?! Call the Social Security Administration immediately and they will check if any activity is found on those cards. If there was no activity on the cards, they will (kinda stupid, but its the law) give you new SS cards, but not new numbers. If this happens, I strongly recommend you get an Identity Protector for the cards, that isn't free to have but they can save you from your identity from being taken. I have LifeLock.
If you do have any activity on the cards prior to notifying the SSA, they will tell you to notify the US Federal Trade Commission and they will help you with the situation.

well first of all im sorry to hear this has happend to u, but the first thing u should have done is gone to ur local ss offices and reported them stolen/missing, this is very dangerous because there is somebody out there with on of the most important documents that a person can have, and second of all u shouldnt carry ss cards in ur purse keep them in like a fire proof case in ur home, contact ur local ss offices immediatley, hopefully no one has used them for any fraudulant activity! good luck to u!

You shouldn't be carrying around all that information in one place! Keep that kind of stuff in a safe or somewheres very safe.. at least not all together.
