I have some ex-in-laws that treat disability (SSI) like it is an upgrade from welfare. I believe they are clearly able to work but have learned to “work the system”. Some entire family’s are on it Mom, Dad, and kids. The kids, because they are “slow”. I overheard one parent coaching a preteen daughter about what she should say during an “interview”. “If they tell you to remember something, you should say you forgot and act dumb”. Yes, I was disgusted and angered. They would also celebrate when one family member’s SSI would come through. When I asked about it, I was told “thats money for life”. I don’t know a lot about the system and don’t want to offend anyone who is truly disabled, but do the funds for disability (SSI) come from the same funds as Social Security for Senior Citizens? If so, could this contribute to future Social Security funding issues.

Some folks do use the system. There are others that deserve to get SSDI. I have paid into this program for 37 years and have a spine injury and have been waiting for more than 3 years to receive benefits. SSDI is separate from old age benefits. We need to have real reform from our government officials. SSDI is not welfare because you must have paid into the system but most people treat it as such. I have an appeal pending and courts are some 17,000 cases behind in Florida. What if you were injured and could never work again and had no ability to receive any medical attention what would you do.
