Sound only comes from one desktop speaker. I’m running Windows Vista. I can’t find any way to fix this. ?

November 5th, 2008 · 4 Comments

Whether I’m using headphones or external speakers, it doesn’t matter. When I listen to music, sound only comes from the right speaker. I can’t get the sound to be evenly balanced across both speakers. I’m running Windows Vista Business. I went to the volume properties but they don’t have a way of configuring the balance of the sound. You basically can just increase or decrease the volume. I tried running Windows Updates but it says that I have all of the latest updates installed. I’m not sure what to do.

Check the most obvious solutions first. Is your jack cable connected to the computer properly? In time that can move away, and the connection can be worse. Although it’s usually the speaker’s/headphone’s jack’s problem.
If it all seems to be alrite, check the control panel for a separate audio control program(usually comes with your motherboard cd, if the sound card is integrated), the balance have to be there.
      Hope I helped a bit.

Double check all connections. The best way to do this (when the computer is shut down) is to unplug each thing (one at a time), and then immediately plug it back in. This would include the sound card, as well.

Good luck with that. I hope this helps. If not, then you have a more serious problem, such as a damaged sound card.

It sounds to me like there might be something wrong with the jack that plugs into the sound card. You didn’t say where exactly you plug the headphones into. First thing I would do is remove the speakers completely from the computer and try another pair of speakers. If it still happens, you might have a faulty sound card.

Does the sound come from both the internal speakers (assuming you have a laptop). If it does then the connections are the problem.
I run XP. Does Vista have a speaker icon on the task bar?
If it does right click it then click “open volume control.”
If it works like XP there is a slider to adjust the balance.
If it doesn’t Mr Gates is losing the plot.
Either way the first step is checking all the connections but if it’s happening on both speakers and ‘phones it would suggest an internal problem with the soundcard or the jack.
