i keep trying to find a FREE spyware and adware remover that will work with windows 98. all the FREE ones i pull up just scan for free and then want you to buy the program to fix the problems it finds. is there a FREEone that i can download that will work with 98se. things like icons in the quicklaunch bar keep vanishing. been told i probably have spyware problems and i nedd to correct this. also, how do you recover lost quickluanch items , like view desktop icon. asked this portion of this question before, but none of the answers i received worked.

Windows 98 is no longer safe as Microsoft has officially ended support. It is an easy target for hackers and I highly advise against using Windows 98 for any banking/personal informational purposes.
No single anti-spyware application is perfect so I recommend using Ad-aware and Spybot (they are free). Other free anti-spyware programs would be AVG Anti-spyware (formally Ewido), Super Anti-spyware and SpywareBlaster.
I strongly recommend using FireFox, it's a far better and safer alternative to Internet Explorer. If you add-on McAfee SiteAdvisor, it will warn you of potentially harmful sites. I also recommend CCleaner which is a free system optimization and privacy tool.
Webroot Spy Sweeper is rated as the best, but it's not free (see the Consumer Search source).
Running these programs in Safe Mode (tap F8 after powering on the computer and choose to boot to Safe Mode) can be more effective.

When I was running Windows 98se, I downloaded and installed the Yahoo! toolbar w/Anti-Spyware. It will scan and remove Spyware and Adware for FREE.
