Sun’s Java Won’t Update of Even Uninstall. Please help.?

November 20th, 2008 · 2 Comments

I have Java 5, update 6. I want to install to the latest version. However, if I try to update, it tells me there is another installation running, and ends. If I try to uninstall what I have, it tells me it it is already installing, to wait for it to finish. I started it in SafeMode, and it just said that it could not find the Windows Installer. Anyone know what is going on?

You are getting a 1500 error, I assume. What happened is that an In-Progress key was left behind when an earlier installation attempt is cancelled forcibly via the Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del) during a installation. So, what you need to do is go to:

      http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

      Then Click Windows XP/Vista/2000/2003 Offline.

The File Download dialog box appears. Choose the folder location. Click Save.

The Save As dialog box appears.

If you have previously downloaded this version of JRE, you may be prompted:

“File jre-6ux-windows-i586.exe already exists. Do you want to replace it?”

Click Yes to replace. Then verify that the:

      * Name of the file is jre-6ux-windows-i586.exe
      * Size is approximately 13.8 MB

Close all applications including the browser.

Double-click on the saved file icon to start the installation process.
