I've never had to manually delete and scan for viruses before, but I'm fairly certain I have one right now. (Insane pop-ups, computer freezing all the time, running extremely slow, etc.) And the thing is, Symantec AntiVirus keeps popping up with the option to "remove risk", "reboot" and "close", the different threats I have on my computer right now. When I click on "remove risk" it tells me to close applications. I do that, and it still won't let me remove or clean the viruses that are listed. I would love instructions on how to manually go in and scan/delete harmful things on my computer, or if anyone knows a good antivirus program that will help me more, that would be appreciated also.

Restart in safe mode (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial61.html), start the Antivirus, run a full system scan and it should delete or quarantine the risks automatically. Doing it in safe mode ensures that the risks are removed.

Step 1: Make sure that Symantec is up to date.
Step 2: Visit the Google Pack website, and use it to download Spyware Doctor.
Step 3: Download and install ThreatFire.
Step 4: Make sure to use Mozilla's Firefox from here on out. Also, install the Adblock Plus and NoScript add-ons for it.
Step 5: Make sure that you have a firewall program on your computer. If you don't, install Comodo.
Step 6: Turn off System Restore, and restart in safe mode
Step 7: Run scans will the programs above.
This is just a quick summary of what you should do. For other recommended programs, and their optimal settings, visit my guide on the matter. http://prometechus.blogspot.com/2007/09/viruses-spyware.html FEEL FREE TO IM ME IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS.

I would recommend bitdefender and kaspersky. They are both quite simple but i found kasp less annoying as bit throws up alot of windows.(Warnings). This is a good sign tho as you know its finding things. I would suggest finding the file that the virus is in and deleting that.
