Under removal instructions for trojans on their website, is it necessary for me to have their programs?
Or is it enough to follow their instructions in editing the registry values at the end of their "removal instructions" page(without use of any symantec products)?

It depends on the threat. One thing I don't like about Symantec removal instructions is a lot of times it is older removal instructions. Malware often changes so it may or may not get rid of it. If you don't have Malwarebytes get it. You can download it from download.com It is free. Install and update. Run a full scan in safemode. Also this link I'm giving you has very good removal instructions for newer trojans. This site has helped many here on yahoo answers. Just do a search of the trojan you found on your system.

I don't recommend symantec products, they sometimes cause crashes on the system.
Some Antivirus and anti spyware programs have poor detection capacity and even cause threats to your computer. For best protection, use both Avira Antivirus for Virus protection and NoAdware 5.0 for spyware, malware and adware protection.
Avira Antivirus

You wouldn't require software to manually remove a threat. However, manually removing a virus can be risky, as you risk destroying your PC if you remove the wrong registry key.
The best way to remove any Internet threat is to go to:
http://www.malwarebytes.org
and download, update, and run their free scanner. It will find and remove just about anything. I top recommend it.
