T1 Router Issue, internet issues, 169.254.x.x. error?

September 11th, 2008 · 4 Comments

I have a business cable line, and now I am adding a T1 line. I have the WAN & LAN IP information from the T1 provider.

Can I just plug in the Ethernet cord and run it into my switch? Do I have to specify which DNS to look to for this new line in the Network connections on the server?

When I connect my laptop to the Ethernet port of the router, crossover or cat5 cable, I get the 169.254.x.x IP. Please advise.
Also I have the Public LAN Network IP's from the T1 Provider, as well as the WAN Gateway, WAN subnet mask, LAN subnet mask and usable Public IP's.
Should I be adding any of the public or usable public IP's in my Network connections on my laptop to get communications with the router?
ok now I got it working, thanks for you insight guys. GTB, I was thinking the same as you, so I input a usable public IP, the WAN gateway and LAN subnet and it worked.

now my question is, how do I get my servers (Win2k3) this information? right now they are set to obtain IP Automatically. how can I take the information I have here and set it in the servers? I have no access to the router, because the provider will not supply password for login, even if I tried.

Jag- thanks for your help. Our cable (comcast) bandwidth shifts too much during the daytime. We sometimes don't get the amount of throughput that we should.

The 169. IP is an internal Windows IP, which means your computer is not accessing anything outside of it. You might want to try to run ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew from the command prompt in windows. Also, try shutting down your switch and your computer, followed by waiting until windows is booted back up to plug back in your switch.

You also may want to check with your T1 provider to make sure they are assigning your ip dynamically through DHCP. They might want you to specify your ip information.

You will need to manually assign one of your "Public IP addresses" to your router. The WAN gateway and subnet MASK the ISP issued also needs to be input into your router. The router should not be requesting from DHCP on the WAN or Internet side. It should be providing DHCP on the Internal side.

Next you will need to ensure DHCP for the internal side is enabled on the router. You will also need to enter a range of "reserved" IP addresses for the router to issue internally. Typically 192.168.2.01-192.168.2.254 is a good choice. Cut the number of reserved IP addresses in the range available to what you actually need.

Next make sure "automatically obtain via DHCP" is set on each and every computer/network device EXCEPT the router itself.

Unless you want the router to be a pass through configuration, you should not enter the public IPs into systems directly. This would create a much higher potential for your systems to be compromised. It may be a necessary evil if you want to run a public web server for example. Then I would recommend you spend some time looking at dedicated security appliances.

I have a question, did you get a better price for a better allocation of bandwidth for your T1 than for a commercial Cable circuit? Most of my clients are going the opposite direction, in ending their T1 in favor of a business cable line.

Edit: 15:44 PDT Given you have a pass through scenario, you will need to manually assign one of your allocated Public IPs to each system.

This leaves your network very vulnerable to attack. I typically recommend a combination of the Netgear GS724AT and the Netgear FVS336G as a firewall appliance to provide a measure of protection for your network. There are also comparable alternatives such as the WatchGuard Firebox X1250e that may more suited to your network requirements.

I presume your provider is terminating with a Smart Jack and that you require an access, not a gateway router and the carrier did not provide the router for you.

Although a smart jack physically is identical to any RJ45 port, the wiring and signal are not the same. In fact you use pins 1, 2, 4, and 5 and there should be a specially wired cable from the router maker used as neither a standard straight or standard crossed CAT5 cable will work. I suspect this may be part of the issue. I believe that you need to have it crossed with pin 1, 2, 4, 5 of side A goes to 4, 5, 1, 2 of side B (but you must check this as some router makers are different).

The access router differs from a gateway router in that the input port from the smart jack has a csu / dsu in addition to a router. No low end home grade router will perform.

The router must be programmed to provide LAN IP addresses via DHCP. Since you are seeing a 169.254.x.x IP address I suspect DHCP is not on.

You use straight CAT5 cable to link the router LAN port to the network switch and from network switch to pcs.

Usually a T1 will come with several static IP addresses, a subnet mask, and default gateway. You can use any of the IP addresses available provided they are not the default gateway, subnet ID or broadcast. Since you did not provide IP info, you may need someone to assist you on this.

A T1 is sold differently than consumer products. Installers have to be familiar with the installation.

Given that you have a very limited understanding, you may be best served getting someone who is well trained to assist you.
