The desktop icons won't show up at all, but the task bar and start menu do. Windows Task Manager opens and so does the start menu, but it won't let me get to Accessories to open System Restore. I tried using command prompt to open it, but it doesn't respond. I don't know what else to do… I can't right click on the desktop either…
Could it be a virus or did we just do something wrong? xD
Also, I can't open any programs… They either won't respond or just don't open at all.
I've restarted the computer about fifteen times. =( I've tried adding explorer.exe again too and that didn't work… I can't open Internet Explorer either. And nothing's running, 'cause I can't open anything… Gah.
Another thing is that I can't log in when I start the computer in safe mode… It says that the username and domain are wrong, except they're right…

If it is a smart virus, then it will not let you open the task manager (CTRL+ALT+DELETE). It is more than likely a virus, but then again, you might have just ended the windows explorer process.(I do not know how to start it back up.) If it is a virus, just reload the OS.

press ctrl, alt, delete at the same time…then go into tasK manager…go to the processes tab..look for the process called explorer.exe,,,,click on it (it should be highlighted) then press the delete key on your keyboard..end the process…next, go to the applications tab in task manager and look to the bottom right of task manager…click new tasK then type in explorer….this may fix your problem…if you still have this problem try downloading service pack three…if you have already done this…reinstall it….here is the link to service pack 3 http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=68c48dad-bc34-40be-8d85-6bb4f56f5110&displaylang=en …good luck

Did you just recently download some program?? See if it is in the task manager and hit end task. Also do that with other programs you don't need to run right now. Sometimes if you are using two anti virus apps they will fight each other and missing icons is a symptom. You need to run a virus check preferably in safe mode.

Restart the system in Safe Mode <F8> and see if you can use System Restore to set the situation back to a time before the troubles happened.
Unfortunately this sounds like the bad guys are winning, and you may well be in for some serious troubleshooting or a reinstall. I hope your data is all backed up.
