There is no personal firewall setting on my Norton AntiVirus 2008?

July 17th, 2008 · 5 Comments

I have used Norton AntiVirus 2007 on a different computer and easily allowed programs through the firewall countless times so I wouldn't have to turn the firewall off all together. I recently downloaded the newest version, 2008, on this computer. I went into Settings and I did not see any option for Personal Firewall.

From what I've seen from Help Websites, there is supposed to be an option for it under Web Browsing. I even checked the left side navigation on different settings' options to check for a possible link to the personal firewall setting but found nothing. I have no idea why this is, but apparently my firewall is active and secure, yet I can't configure it. Yes, I am logged as an administrator.

Here's an image of my settings:

Any ideas? The possibility of reinstalling is not appealing but I'm hoping there is a fix for uncovering these hidden settings…
If that link isn't working for some reason… http://i344.photobucket.com/albums/p344/SilverAbyss7/Photos/Norton.jpg
I know the firewall is included because it blocks specific programs' access to the internet. Plus in the home tab of Norton AntiVirus I can see Inbound Firewall: Secure.

As far as I can determine from the Symantec website, there is no personal firewall protection in NAV 2008.

Consider just downloading the Comodo Pro (free) firewall and using that. It is rated the best firewall product on the market. It even beat out Zonealarm.

Comodo Firewall Pro is free software that outperforms virtually all other firewall solutions - paid or free because Comodo Firewall Pro (V3.0) operates from a sophisticated, preventative, multi layered threat management approach. This approach is considered leading edge by the security industry and is seen as being far superior to most other traditional "detection" approaches used by other security vendors. As a result, Comodo Firewall Pro has garnered many awards and distinctions such as:

      PC Magazine: Editor's Choice (2008)
PC World: '101 Fantastic Freebies' (2008)
Computerworld: '10 Essential (and free) Security Downloads for Windows' (2008)

A lot of people seem to have this problem
Here is what I found that helps
      1. The first thing that you should do is start Norton Internet Security. You should be able find the program in your Start Menu.
      2. You should see a tab called Norton Internet Security.
      3. Now click on Settings.
      4. Find the category called Web Browsing and click on the sub-category called Personal Firewall.
      5. Click on the option that says Configure.
      6. Look to the left and go Personal Firewall -> Program Control.
      7. We want to modify an existing program rule instead of adding a new program to the list. So find any entries pertaining to the program you want to allow.
      8. There should be drop-down menus next to each program. You will have choices similar to Allow, Block or Custom. Choose Allow for all of the entries pertaining to the program you want to allow.
      9. Restart your computer so that your new settings can take effect.
      10. Note: After the pogram is working again; you may want to return to the list and choose Custom to enhance your security.

You are confusing Norton Anti-virus with one of the complete Norton security suites.

      Norton 360 includes firewall.
      Norton Internet Security includes firewall.
      Norton Anti-virus is anti-virus only.

      A handy-dandy chart is here:
      http://www.symantec.com/norton/internet-security

      There is no hidden settings.

That "Inbound Firewall: Secure" is simply monitoring your built-in "one-way" Windows Firewall. It is not a firewall in and of itself.
