Trend Micro AntiVirus not working. EMERGENCY!!!?

please o please help…
my gateway laptop is going fritzay. it will not shut down or restart. everything else is fine.
Trend Micro AntiVirus says in the browser
last update: feb 22, 2008 defensesout of date. (but i am unable to update because it says a scan is in process.
last scan: feb 24 2008

when i go to the menu and hit turn of i ge the little menu saying stand by, turn off, or restart. ill either go to turn off or restart and i get a message stating
your security has not finished looking for threats. please wait for the scan to finish before trying again. i hit the ok button.
i can also not delete trend from the laptop for some odd reason.

and on the mysterious feburary 24th. i was at my mother's house and attempted to upload my antivirus onto her computer. it would not work so i quit and got her her own subscription.. ..
fast forward to today. grrr. please help any body???

      I loaded Trend Micro Internet Security 2008 on my PC for about 10 days. During that time, I had all kinds of troubles and tech support was right up there with the worst I've ever had. I am now using McAfee and couldn't be happier. I'll never use Trend Micro again.

      The antivirus program is preventing you from shutting down? There are two ways to go about stopping this.

      1. Force shutdown. Hold down the power button that you usually use to turn on your computer for 6 or so seconds until the computer turns off.

      2. Disable trend micro antivirus. Go to task manager and find the task. Click end task. If that doesn't work right click on the task and select "go to process". Then end the process.

      I'm not sure how to fux it, but if you need to do a scan right away you can go to trendmicro.com and click on "housecall" and it will do a full scan of your computer.

      If I were in your shoes I would get rid of that antivirus program and get another one., even a Free one that works good. . But before you install another antivirus program make sure that you Uninstall the one that you already have. Go to Start>: Control Panel> look for Programs, and below that is "Uninstall programs, click there and follow directions, (this is for window vista) In windowXP you look for the Add/Remove program list , look for trend micro once found scroll to the left and you will see the Add/Remove button. left click on the Remove side, then you are done. What ever window you are using there is an add/remove or uninstall programs buttons . Just follow directions. If you want protections right away here is a link for a good antivirus program and its FREE, the name is AVG by gridsoft. (http://www.free.grisoft.com) But remember not to install any other antivirus progrm until you get rid of trend micro first. Good Luck

      Try this solution from Trend Micro to solve the updating problem.

      The scan you cannot terminate may be the pre-installation scan for your mother's computer, when you attempted to install your av on her computer.
      Disconnect from the Internet, then disable your antivirus program. You should then be able to reboot your computer.
      That should solve the unending scanning problem.
