I asked about this earlier but Im reposting to try and get more help - and explain better.
My computer was corrupted and someone told me i could repair the files using an xp disk They said I wouldnt need a reg key. My computer never came with a disk so I borrowed a friends. I followed the instructions (I did not choose the recovery program as advised - I pressed enter at first set up screen, then F8 for the agreement then chose repair by pressing R.
It did its thing and was copying files but now its asking for a registration key which I obviously dont have as its a copy of XP- not mine.
I don't know what to do! Are my files still Ok? If I take this to a repair shop can they recover my files and how much might it cost?

What you have done there, is reinstalled Windows completely.
When you put the Windows XP CD in and boot from it, you will get the option to install Windows or repair Windows. If you choose to repair, you don't get a license agreement, it just takes you straight into a command line.
Unfortunately, now that you've reinstalled Windows, you won't be able to run the recovery console to repair your previous one. You'll need to get a license key from somewhere, unless you have a recovery CD that came with your computer.
Be warned though, if you use the recovery CD that came with your computer, you WILL loose any files and programs installed. You may have already lost these files, but it is possible that you simply installed Windows over the existing one without formatting the hard drive.

If you have a XP operating CD then you obviously have a registration key. If you have then try the back side of the case and I hope that you will be got it. (it is 25 character in the format - XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXX-XXXXX) But if you don't have one then I suggest you to go a repair home and they can help you.
or you can call one of your friend who have an better idea about computer and operating system installation as well.

if your pc didnt come with a disc when new there is a recovery console built into the hd, press the start button to start the pc and immediately start tapping F10 until the recovery console appears and follow the instructions, you should never use someone elses disc even to try a repair as the sserial numbers are different, this is why it is asking for a key. if F10 doesnt work try F11 as a few makers use this key and follow instructions to repair your system

Call your manufacturer and order a new disc specific for your computer, and only yours. You will have to re-install the discs (mine had 8). You will be up and running like new, but will lose EVERYTHING you had on your hard drive.
But first you can try to reboot and press the 'F10' key and 'restart from an earlier time' to reset your settings. If that doesn't work, then do the above steps.
