Yep, McAfee has joined Norton in the "Cr@pware" category.
Why pay for something you can get for free?
Here are some suggestions of programs that I use and recommend:
Avast Anti-Virus
http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html
NOTE: Use the "directly from our website" link that shows just below the CNET button. Then be sure to register it annually so you can get updates. This is FREE!!!
Spybot Search and Destroy
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html
Malwarebytes Antimalware Free version
http://www.malwarebytes.org/products.php
Comodo Firewall
http://personalfirewall.comodo.com/download_firewall.html
NOTE: During installation you will be given the choice to install the firewall and the anti-virus. ONLY install the firewall since you’ll already have the Avast. Running two AV softwares together will result in conflicts that can freeze a computer in its tracks!
For Windows Updates there is IE (Internet Explorer), for EVERYTHING else there is Firefox:
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/personal.html
To help protect your computer even more get the WOT and NoScript Add-ons for Firefox.
If you insist upon only using IE then at least get WOT for IE here:
http://www.mywot.com/en/download/ie
For NoScript-like features you must use IE8.
I hope this helps. Good luck!
