sorry but this is pissing me @@f! I uninstall 'avast' with revo uninstaller… restart the computer so that I can install "avg", but during the install avg says that I should uninstall my other security/ virus software before installing avg. Well I thought I just did it, look in the the program folder and avast is there, as though I never uninstalled it. What gives? I want to wipe avast off so that I can install avg, but avast is always there and I don't know what to do. thanks

Install the avast again and uninstall through add-remove programs.
Now try to install AVG. It will work.

Avast is just as good, if not better than avg, but whatever suits you.
You probably are required to remove it through add/remove programs and not through a freeware program.

I had the same problem with Avast when I tried to change to another anti-virus protection. The problem is that Avast leaves little parts of itself in the registry even if you get it uninstalled good to where you can install AVG. The best thing you can do is to have someone (you or a computer savvy friend) run the registry and get it all cleaned out. Of course, you always want to make sure you have a back up of it just in case. That is the best way to get rid of such pesky programs. BUT, if you don't know how to do this, don't try it yourself. You could easily cook your entire system and have to start from scratch.

Download this . It will show you all the programs that start when you start your computer. Under " logon" check to see if there is an entry for Avast and delete it. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx
Search for all files for avast and delete.
Go to registry, back up registry and then delete all avast entries.
