Uninstall upadates in safe mode (vista)?

May 29th, 2008 · 2 Comments

I installed a 'windows vista update' important update that was released on the 27th may 08. But before I could restart my laptop crashed, not because of the update though.

When I logged back in it finished installing the update but afterwards (and anytime i try now) it hangs at 'Please wait' screen just before the user name entry box appears.

Now the only way I can log back in is using the safe boot mode. I tried all the other modes but they all acted the same way. I tried startup repair from the install DVD but no errors were found. I also tried a restore point but, as usual, the saves i'd made had magically disappeared.

I was thinking if i uninstall the last update it might fix it, problem is in safe boot it says you havent got any updates installed, i tried activating it in services.msc but it wouldn't let me.

Please help, I don't want to restart my whole system again
I've already done that 4 times this year :'o(
In response to the answers i have recieved so far:
- I left the machine running from 8pm til 11am, it still hadn't changed.
- No updates appear at all and restore point won't run within safe mode and using the retail DVD's restore point fix just brings up a 'no restore points' window (despite I know I made one, once I had got my laptop back to were it was before I had to restart it. I learned from that lesson but my computer didn't. I've never been able to get restore points to work completely)

How long are you waiting while the welcome screen is on. Reason I ask is that the computer may still be trying to install the update and you may not be waiting long enough. Had a similair problem myself. Try just leaving it and see if it eventually brings up the login screen. Another thing you can try is on bootup you press F8 and I believe it gives you a list of restore points you can try to restore order to your machine.

you can restore to another date just click on it also in the add/remove look near the top for a box that says show updates and see if it's there if not like the other person said it could be still trying to install it
