Uninstall video converter program but keep codec?

Well I want to uninstall certain video converting programs on my computer but I noticed that some of the codecs are removed along with the converter program. Is there a way to keep these codecs upon uninstalling of the program? I tried uninstalling one of my converter programs and it removes the codec altogether. So I ended up installing it back again because I need that codec.
