Okay, so i've been using AVG free edition. A lot of people say that it's the best free virus scanner.
I think otherwise.
I needed a file from a friend. She gave me a USB with the file. Paranoid of viruses, i scanned it with AVG. AVG detected a Trojan/worm, and then deleted it.
I scanned the USB again to check if it was safe. The test revealed that "no threats found". Note that i am using the most updated version of AVG free.
I double click the USB and BOOM. Norton Antivirus, which always runs in the background detects a virus! It says it sent the file to quarantine, but apparently it's too late; the norton notification hangs.
From that moment on, everytime i start my pc, something bad happens.
I need a good scanner. I've tried everything (safe mode, system restore, command prompt, attrib -s -h -r., scan in safe mode)
this autorun.inf won't leave, and it's getting worse.
send me a link. I don't want to reformat.

Try using Avira instead. I would also recommend Spyware Doctor (You can get the Starter Edition for free from the Google Pack website or Download.com)

first of all you are not suppose to run two antivirus programs at the same time and no antivirus will catch all viruses take to a computer shop where they know what they are doing

Download and install Avast, anti-virus, anti-spyware, anti-rootkit and free:

Remove Norton using the specific tool for your version:
http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039
AVG rates low in performance and detection and is also a resource hog on some machines.
Also worth using is Malwarebytes Anti-Malware:

Perform disk clean
To me this is the best thing to do
Install avastv4.7/8 link to avast: http://mars.arts.u-szeged.hu/ftp/virus/FREE/Avast/
click on .exe file
when completing the installion of avast on ur machine click on yes when it asks "scan after reboot/scan after restart"
restart ur machine let avast scan ur machine, and u will be alright.
why avast is good for your problem is that, in ur situation, it does not scan on the machine when it is on logon/desktop
it scans like it is on safe mode, therefore not enabling the viruses to run in ur processes.
Note: when avast finds virus in windows folder do not delete it repair it after ur windows is on desktop/logon
