Video Card & Monitor Resolution?

September 24th, 2008 · 2 Comments

I have a laptop with NVIDIA GeForce Go 7400 video card and a (max) screen resolution of 1280×800. I am thinking to get a monitor with “recommended” resolution of 1920×1200 (detailed in its specs). Can I utilize the monitor’s full resolution given that my laptop can only output 1280×800 on the screen?

A more general question is what is the direct relationship between the video card and monitor resolution?

Your video card is capable of outputting 1920×1200 from the vga port. Go ahead and buy the monitor!

When you install your video card driver, then you can use the maximum resolution of video card though your monitor's resolution maybe different.
