In my opinion, there is no reason to get Vista Home Basic. You get all the pain of Vista (which is discussed ad nauseum in Yahoo! Answers) without the benefits. If these are your only two choices, go with XP Pro.
You seem to be leaning towards Vista. I won't do the Vista versus XP dance (see above), but if you want to go Vista, at least go with Home Premium. Make sure you have at least 2Gb RAM, especially on a laptop.

Get XP Pro. I use computers on a daily basis with Vista and XP. Vista LOOKS really cool but XP is more of a polished OS. You might run into compatibility problems with Vista but you will get none with XP.
Ask the representative whom you are purchasing the laptop from if you choose the XP option will you be getting a free upgrade to Vista in the future if you should choose to switch. I ordered computers for my job recently and I was told that even though we would be receiving XP (by choice) we would get a Vista license. Down the line since we would have official Vista licenses we can upgrade at any time. I honestly am not sure if this is a special thing my company arranged or this holds true for anyone buying a new computer. You need to ask.

as u have 2 gb ram u would be fine with vista home edition. The other editions of vista come with too much baggage and you wont need that much pain.
I m using vista home premium for 2 months and i m quite satisfied with its results..and seeing your needs i think even it will suit you…also vista will remain..
XP is like old is gold…

XP is old technology and Microsoft has already stopped selling it. I would recommend Vista, it will run fine on that system and do all of the things you have listed. I certainly would not pay extra $$$ for an outdated OS which Microsoft will end support for at some point.

Being both a XP Pro and a Vista (ultimate) user, I think that It would be best to go with Vista seeing that as you have already stated what you will be using the laptop for. Vista offers a more user friendly interface, the upgrade of ms office will make your work look classy but with less effort in comparison to Xp. The Media center that comes with Vista will be an added benefit to you for entertainment and you can use it to browse your documents and the Internet as well. As for the Internet, Tabs will come in very handy allowing you to open one web browser and view different pages in one place.
Vista is going to replace Xp eventually so invest in the Vista but could I suggest that you get a higher version from Home edition just in case you want to take you laptop along to work one of these days, the home edition may not give you alto of options when it comes to the network connections.
Take my advise go with Vista, it will be different but once you get use to it you will be satisfied with the type of work you can produce it.

I rather pay extra money for Home Premium Vista, instead of XP Pro. which is a great OS, but very soon obsolete.
Or you can get the Vista Basic, and some day upgrade to Home Premium,
