I got a new Laptop recently. It came installed with Vista Service Pack 1 which, I believe, has Direct X 10. The system is reasonable but I was wondering for performance reasons:
A) if Direct X 10 can roll back to 9 or earlier.
B) if A isn't true, is it better to run Direct X 10 in a Dx9 or Dx8 application or is it better to run it in its corresponding version of Direct X?
C) if I can install earlier versions of Direct X without overwriting Dx10 or any part of it.

WHY WOULD YOU UNINSTALL divx 10 to install 9???
you can run a game or anything that uses divx 9 on 10 and it will even have improvements!!!!!

A)No you can't go back to Direct-X 9 or earlier
B)Now games that don't support Direct-X 10(because they were released before Vista even existed for example) will still be playable in Direct-X 10. Although, when you play them you won't see any differences in graphics(the graphics will be at the same level as with the other Direct-X versions. Now for the games that support Direct-X that means that it's also playable in Direct-X 10 with improved graphics than the other versions.
C)Not sure for this, but I don't think that is possible

Some Direct X facts:
1) Vista SP1 has Direct X 10.1
2) Direct X is backwards compatible, which means if you run a DX9 app, it will run in DX9 mode even if you have DX10 installed.
3) You cant run DX10 on a DX9 hardware.
4) You cant install DX10 on XP even if you have DX10 compatible hardware.
Now to answer your Qs..
A) You cant roll back DX10 to DX9.
B) You cant run a DX8 or 9 in DX10 mode and vice versa.
C) Like I said, DX is backwards compatible.
