Vista does not uninstall software completely?

I've uninstalled a couple of software on my PC using the uninstaller that comes with the software, however after uninstalling I am still left with components that came with the software (on Start>all programs). When I go to Control Panel to uninstall it, the components can't be seen. What is the best way to remove everything completely? Should I just go to Window Explorer and manually delete them? Help!
